This box has been waiting to come out of the closet.
It's been a topic I've been avoiding for quite some time and I've needed to come face to face
with this issue.
You see,
I've had this box tucked in the corner of our closet, behind my husband's jeans, for years.
(A new box gets replaced each year.)
I don't always pay much attention to it's contents,
because, well, it's tucked behind his jeans and it's not until my "file" pile gets sky high
or say, till the end of the year,
when I finally decide,
"hey, I need to file."
I needed a solution to this neglect.
A simple and inexpensive solution.
I decided a small filing cabinet,
preferably black, with wheels,
so I could roll under my small desk,
would be the answer to the neglect.
As with most of my home decor dilemmas,
my answer to the solution is
I made my way to the closest Goodwill and was
not in the store for more than 5 minutes
when I found exactly what I was looking for,
a filing cabinet.
It was compact,
perfect for underneath my desk,
and it had wheels.
For only $6.99,
one more criteria was met,
Inexpensive.

It was fate,
the planets were all in alignment that day.
the planets were all in alignment that day.
(Shoot, I should've played the lottery.)
I put it in my car then headed next door to Walmart
to pick up some black spray paint and primer.
Painting laminate surfaces can be a bit tricky
so using a primer helps the paint "stick" to the
surface, making it more durable and hides most imperfections.
The top trim was missing on the front of the cart,
exposing the particle board,
so I simply removed the trim
from the top piece on the back
and glued it to the front.
from the top piece on the back
and glued it to the front.
Piece of cake.
I glued, I cleaned, I sprayed,
then I let the cabinet hang out on the back patio
the whole afternoon to cure.
One benefit of living in Arizona.
Here is it nice and fresh.
I also bought some black and white folders at Walmart and added labels with my
handy dandy labeler.
I also added a deep canvas box,
which I already owned, to the open shelf
which I already owned, to the open shelf
to catch the paperwork from my desk.
I rolled my new filing cabinet underneath my desk,
and danced a little Saturday Night Fever,
Stayin' Alive move,
and went from this...
brace yourselves....
to this...

ReplyDeleteLooking at the after you'd never know it was cheap. But chic? Definitely!
How in the world do you have such luck at your Goodwill?! I just made a stop at the thrift store for some stuff for the pantry and found nothing. You scored a great item! It's perfect for your space. Super job :)
ReplyDeleteLisa, you really know how to make something cheap look fancy and expensive. I love it and it is perfect in its new home. I need one of those labelers before I start organizing.
