In Need of an "After"

Okay,
now don't say anything to Eve,
 (my hutch)

but take a gander at what I acquired at Goodwill.

Some most gracious soul donated the piece with the bottom half already sanded
and
the top half was left with its original finish.
The nerve.

Bottom.

Top.

While I'm not that stoked about the top,
I'm loving the bottom and what it's got to offer.

2 doors and a one drawer and some simple detail.

I can picture this buffet in the entryway with a couple of nice lamps.
It can pass on it's sunny disposition to every entering guest.

Now,
life changing decisions of epic proportions
 must be made.

Shelves...

no shelves.

Painted...

painted and stained...

or just stained?

Or...

do I add the shelves

and tell Eve that she's has a twin sister?

I have the "before"
now I need an "after."

This calls for a vote.

Painted?
Painted and stained?
Stained?
Shelves?
No shelves?

Please voice your opinion.

Operators are standing by...

P.S.
I forgot to mention,
the low, low, price of $40.00.
Now, that's worth voting for,
wouldn't you say?

  1. $40!?!?! That's amazing. I vote painted to match Eve if you are keeping it in the same room with no shelves. If you are putting it some where else, like a foyer, then I vote stained (still no shelves).

  2. I vote for all white, and brown stained top, no shelves. You can call "him" Adam. Judy B.

  3. What a great find. . I love it. Of course paint it. Thanks for sharing.

  4. Painted AND stained! Like chocolate and peanut butter, like peas and carrots, like diet coke and ice!! Love it! If it were me, I'd do just the bottom and see what I thought for a week or two before doing the top. But I'm all about lazy!

  5. Lisa, you found another great piece and a great price!! I love the little picture of the painted and stained or glazed piece that looks just like the one you bought. I say no shelves unless you need more display space. Eve would be so jealous.

    ReplyDelete
  6. I'm jealous! I'd have to say that the finish you choose depends on the style of decor that you have in your house now. I don't know what your house looks like now or what you have in mind, so I can't give an educated opinion just yet. However, all of the options are sensational and I really don't see how you can go wrong with any of them. Happy painting!

  7. Awesome find!! I need you to find me some furniture too, ok?

I vote either the picture next to the one painted blue (the distressed looking one) or finished wood! I think either would look awesome and be a compliment to Eve. I would also leave the shelves off and donate them back to Goodwill. Too old fashioned for my tastes.

You have to post pictures of the finished product!!

  8. What a great deal, I can't wait to see what you do with him !

    ReplyDelete
  9. I vote painted to match Eve...but with a stained top so Eve still stands out in all her glory. :0) Oh and no shelves.

    ReplyDelete
  10. I would say stain the top and paint the bottom if you want the two pieces to be cohesive. If not, stain it. Either way, great deal! Don't put the shelves back on. It looks much better without them.

My mom loves to refinish furniture.

  11. I say paint the bottom, ditch the top. It will make a wonderful sideboard that you literally can use in any room in your house. The price was right to!

    ReplyDelete
  12. Wow 40 bucks?! what a steal! I say paint it and no shelves! but i'm sure whatever you come up with, it'll look brilliant.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Our Goodwill store doesn't carry furniture, but the Salvation Army does! Still, $40 is a steal. Is the newbie going to be in the same room with Eve? Then they both should have coordinating colors. If "Adam" is in a different room, then he can dare to be different!

The top might look better painted or stained, or you can ditch the top and just use the bottom as a sideboard, as Shirley Watts said.

  15. Stopping by from Metamorphosis Monday! Paint and stain definitely! If it won't look like too much, I like the shelves. We wouldn't want Eve to get envy, though!

    ReplyDelete
  16. You know what? You could always use it sans hutch/ shelves. Then you can hang the hutch/ shelves after placing a bottom on it. Make sense? Two pieces for the price of one!!!

  17. Lisa,

Nice piece. I vote for a Distressed Finish. I love the look because it gives a piece depth and personality beyond what the original thought of. Additionally, if it gets nicked in the future no one will know is wasn't part of the original finish.

  18. My vote is stained & painted, without shelves...but I think it will look great anyway you finish it!

  19. That is an amazing piece. I'll cast my vote for painted and stained... And I know you're not crazy about the top- but I think it's got a lot of character.

  32. I vote for stained with no shelves.

I had a similar find a few years ago - table, 4 chairs, and a hutch like yours - $80! I think they made a mistake when they priced it, but that's what I paid for it!

I took the shelves off of mine and it is used as an entry table/buffet by the front door. My other hutch (we'll call him Henry) likes to be the only dude with a top!

Great post as usual!! 10 kernels

  35. I think I like it as it is...

No, really, I say very distressed paint and stained shelves...but, I'll bet, it will pretty no matter what you do to it.

Thanks for letting Layla talk you into checking me out at Cottage Hill!

  36. You had me hooked at Eve. :) I can't wait to see what you do or what you name your newest friend. I see some real possibilities there. I kind of like it without the top but it all depends on the space where you are using it. If you use the top I'd paint it two different colors. Oh, shoot, I gave it away. I guess I would paint rather than stain. I love painted piece and I think this one really lends itself to that. I wouldn't mind a stained top on the bottom piece though. I've always thought that was a good look.
Explain to Eve that she will always be your favorite. I tell each one of my kids that. :)
    XOXO,

  38. Gotta Keep the Shelves Auntie!! Stain a rich mahogany brown and add some copper handles or knobs.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I love that piece...the simple detail on the bottom just makes it...but I can't help you decide! Although, I think if you are using it in the same room with the other piece, lose the shelves.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Oh yes, painted to match Eve! Love it!
    Brenda

    ReplyDelete
  41. I would say painted, only because once you stain a piece it's hard to paint over it. If you paint it, you can change the color a dozen times and it won't made a huge difference. But that's just me trying to get more choices out of one look.

What a great deal. In my house, the shelves could be used elsewhere and the dresser in a different location.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I would put a nice deep chocolate stain on it and THEN paint it white. THEN, I would lightly sand back all around the edges and then-some!

    Nice find!

    ReplyDelete
  43. To paint or not the paint?
    That is the question.
    Also, to shelve or not?
    You need an opinion.

"I'm not that stoked about the top,"
    You said it already yourself.
You're seeing it with lamps in the entrance
Then I'd say go with no shelf!

Now paint, stain, or a combination?
In this case more is best.
So paint it AND stain it,
    And give your entryway zest!

    Give Eve a sister,
    But not an exact twin.
    Don't make her feel threatened;
Just give her a good friend!

    ReplyDelete
  44. I'm not the best person to ask advice from but I can't wait to see what you do with it! I love it!

  45. I vote painted, no shelves... who'd want to upset Eve anyhow?

    ReplyDelete
  46. Eve is such a beauty, my vote goes for separating the 2 pieces, and using that shelving somewhere else. As for the sanded bottom part, I love the piece in the picture with the hand painted details! I also love the white with the stained top! Oh darn I am no help at all! I can't decide.
