A Lesson in Chickens

When we visit friends and family in the small towns in Southern Colorado
my daughter is in her element.

She loves to be outdoors and if she visits someone with farm animals,
we just have to sit back and wave goodbye.

Take my niece for instance,
she is eleven and raises her own chickens.

My daughter loves to head over to the chicken pen  to gather the eggs.

She takes in all the information she can about raising chickens.

My neice carefully oversees the egg collecting,

and sometimes has to step in when my daughter

realizes the eggs don't always come out clean,

or when a hen is not happy that your taking her eggs
 and pecks you in protest.
A major work related risk.

They discuss laying pellets to increase egg production,

and how to introduce new hens to the flock.

This is serious business.

Next thing you know, we'll be sporting a sign like this in our Phoenix suburb.

My niece, her kitten Golda,
and her thriving business.

For Sale:  Fresh Eggs.
$1.50 doz.

P.S.
My daughter wants a kitten too,
and a horse, a cow, and some sheep...

  1. Lisa, they are so cute collecting those eggs. Your daughter has the prettiest curly hair. I guess it is natural. My sister has curly hair like that, too and mine is nearly straight.

    I want chickens now, too!
$1.50 is a great price, by the way--I usually pay $3.00 for farm eggs 'round here!
Blessings to you as you make your home!

  6. That farm looks like a little girls dream! What a fun way to learn how food gets to the table. I hope your daughter managed not to get too hen pecked!
